During the last six weeks of school, a group of 3rd graders decided they wanted to take action and help build a water-well in Nicaragua. With parents expectations set at only a few hundred dollars, the group of children set their goals at a hefty $10,000. They set up lemonade stands, did bake sales, as well as a huge read-a-thon where people pledged money for every book read. The children bypassed their goal by $4,000! A group of 3rd graders! Only SIX weeks! This is the type of activism I enjoy seeing in the youth. They developed a passion, just as Room 224 did, that will stay with them forever. Better than any lesson a book can teach.
I applaud their efforts.
